About neil

Neil started developing an interest in singing Hindi songs from 2006 onwards. Having grown up entirely in Australia, he never learnt to speak or sing in Hindi, but has since managed to pick up the language and is trying to improve his accent/vocabulary everyday. Prior to this, he regularly performed in the top choir group during his schooling years at Sydney Grammar School.

Neil is thoroughly assisted in all aspects of singing by Mitu Sengupta (his Mother & ‘Guru’), who is a trained classical singer specialising in Rabindra Sangeet. Under her guidance and tutelage, Neil transformed his musical passion into a serious hobby.

In 2008, Neil auditioned for “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Challenge 2009” (as shown on Zee TV worldwide) in Kolkata, India. He surpassed more than 10 different audition rounds (taking place across Kolkata & Mumbai) and was selected in the ‘Final 24’ as the first person ever to represent Australia in “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa” history. He was also the only successful contestant of foreign origin to audition for the program in India (alongside local hopefuls).

Neil was then chosen to sing his first solo playback song: ‘Aap Jo Mil Gaye’, which is the title track to the hindi film ‘Najuk Rishtey’. The song received much public acclaim when it was released around the world. In August 2009, Neil performed a hindi song whilst taking part as a contestant on Channel 9’s quiz program: ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire’. This was the first ever instance of someone performing a hindi song on Australian National TV! He has also appeared on other Australian TV game shows (such as Channel 7’s ‘Wheel of Fortune’) and won numerous times.

Neil has performed alongside many Bollywood superstars such as Daler Mehndi & RDB. He regularly performs around Sydney in various concerts, and most recently completed his first ‘Live Solo Concert’ – a sellout event and a great success!

Neil also enjoyed an award-winning stint as a Radio DJ in New Zealand. He has presented popular Indian Community TV shows in Sydney and is regularly employed a Master of Ceremonies (MC) for cultural programs & concerts. Neil also became the overall winner in a local 'Indian Idol'-style contest in 2007 and had a minor role in Anupam Kher’s 2005 movie, ‘Om Jai Jagdish’.
